ABOUT THE AUDACITY

The People Behind
The Audacity

Art doesn't happen by itself. Neither did this place.

01

The Audacity Gallery was founded in Flint by photographer, storyteller, entrepreneur, and community builder Latrisha Matson with a simple belief: art should feel alive.

It shouldn't feel distant, overly polished, or like you need permission to understand it.

Located in Buckham Alley, The Audacity is part gallery, part gathering place, and part experiment. It is a space where visual art, music, photography, food, storytelling, performance, and beautifully strange ideas are allowed to collide.

FOUNDER

Latrisha Matson

Founder & Gallery Director

Latrisha Matson has spent much of her life somewhere between art, business, storytelling, and community.

A Flint native, she grew up immersed in the city's creative subcultures, the kind of places and people that taught her to see possibility in things others might overlook.

She began working professionally as a photographer in 2006, eventually photographing people, businesses, events, and stories throughout Michigan and across the country, including New York, Minneapolis, Florida, and California.

Her career expanded into journalism, writing, marketing, business development, advocacy, political campaigns, event production, and entrepreneurship.

But the common thread has always been people and their stories.

The Audacity Gallery is where all of those experiences finally meet.

Latrisha founded the gallery to create more than another room where artwork hangs on a wall. Her vision is a living creative space where artists can experiment, audiences can participate, strangers can meet, ideas can become projects, and creators can find meaningful opportunities.

Some nights that means an exhibition.

Other nights it might mean music, storytelling, dinner, a social experiment, an immersive installation, or an idea nobody has figured out how to categorize yet.

That's kind of the point.

BUILT THROUGH COLLABORATION

One person's idea.
Never one person's world.

The Audacity may have started with one person's idea, but it was never intended to become one person's world.

The people helping build it bring their own disciplines, histories, ideas, and ridiculous amounts of creative energy to the space.

CREATIVE COLLABORATOR

Seth Stolz

Artist · Creative Collaborator · Broken Silence Studios

Seth Stolz is a Flint artist and music producer whose work spans murals, reclaimed materials, immersive installations, music, and large-scale creative projects.

Through Broken Silence Studios, Seth has created his own home for experimentation in sound and visual art alongside The Audacity Gallery.

Seth and Latrisha's creative relationship grew from years of friendship, shared history, and a mutual belief that artists need places where they can take chances.

The relationship between Broken Silence Studios and The Audacity allows music, visual art, performance, installation, and sound to naturally cross paths.

Sometimes there isn't a clear line between the studio and the gallery. We like it that way.

GALLERY LIFE

Michele Rowley

Gallery Administrator · Concierge · Visual Artist

Michele Rowley helps make The Audacity feel like a place people belong.

As Gallery Administrator and Concierge, Michele supports the everyday life of the gallery, works with artists and visitors, and helps turn some of our more ambitious ideas into actual experiences.

Michele is also a visual artist working with paint, bold color, texture, nostalgia, curiosity, and experimentation.

Her creativity doesn't stop with visual art. She is also an experienced chef specializing in vegan cuisine, adding another medium to a gallery that doesn't believe creativity should be confined to a canvas.

WHAT WE DO

We exhibit art.
But that's only the beginning.

The Audacity Gallery creates exhibitions, live music, immersive experiences, interactive installations, storytelling events, workshops, dinners, pop-ups, social experiments, community gatherings, and occasionally things we don't have a proper name for yet.

We also work to create practical opportunities for independent creatives by connecting artists, musicians, photographers, performers, chefs, writers, makers, and other creators with audiences, collaborations, commissions, events, and paid opportunities.

Because artists deserve more than exposure.
They deserve opportunity.

THIS IS FLINT.

It grew here.

The Audacity isn't trying to recreate a gallery from New York, Los Angeles, or somewhere else.

It grew here.

In Flint.

In Buckham Alley.

From friendships, art, music, old buildings, strange ideas, long conversations, people making things with whatever they had available, and the stubborn belief that something meaningful can happen when you give creative people a place to find one another.

Built by artists. Built through collaboration. Built with a little audacity.
